Chapter Fourteen

Luke and the other Whelan’s looked at me strangely when I explained the ridiculous ritual. When I googled when the moon would be at its zenith, it was early in the evening, 5:16 p.m. It would still be light. That would be a change. It also didn’t give us much time to prepare. So, after I explained what would happen, I quickly gathered the supplies I needed and hurried out to the altar.

Megan decided to stay behind with the Whelans at my house. Mr. Mittens accompanied me because he insisted on “protecting” me from my own woods. It was a good idea since I still wasn’t over the unicorn incident.

I set up the altar and danced my dance before I said the stupid rhyme. I felt better this time, and the movement didn’t hurt. At the end of the chant, my grandfather, without a delay, appeared in a blaze of light. He wasn’t dressed for war this time, but he was still grumpy.

“Why did you summon me?” he demanded, his voice thunderous in the still clearing.

“Forgive me, grandfather. I don’t have any way to contact you or Dana, and I have a pressing magical emergency,” I said, nervously.

“Well, what is it, child? I cannot stay long,” he answered and crossed his huge muscle-bound arms over his equally muscle hard torso.

Mr. Mittens jumped up on the altar and folded his tail neatly around his legs, watching with his luminous blue eyes. It started to mist. I shivered.

“Umm, the witch that stole my magic, used my ice to freeze two of my friends into statues.” I opened my phone and showed him the pictures of Gabe and Madison encased in their thin veil of ice.

He held the phone with a frown, examined the device carefully—as though it was going to burn him—and finally looked at the photos. I flipped the page back and forth so he could view both victims.

“What is this clever device?” he asked.

“It’s a smart phone. A small computer that allows me to make phone calls and access the internet. It also acts as a camera, and lots of other things.”

“Phones when I was last here were simple machines,” he intoned. “I do not understand computer?”

“Yes, phones have changed a lot in the last few years.” I put the phone back in my pocket and looked up at him. I had no idea how to explain a computer, so I ignored that part of his statement. “What about my frozen friends? Is there a way to unfreeze them safely?”

“Yes, we should conclude our business quickly. I can explore the changes in this realm later. As for unfreezing them, there are two possibilities. You melt them with your fire magic, or you reverse your ice magic.”

I opened my mouth to interrupt him and remind him I’d lost the ice magic, but he put up a hand to stop me. “I know the issues with your ice magic. The fire magic is a difficult one, as you’ll have to be careful not to burn your friends.
