Chapter Fourteen
Luke and the other Whelanâs looked at me strangely when I explained the ridiculous ritual. When I googled when the moon would be at its zenith, it was early in the evening, 5:16 p.m. It would still be light. That would be a change. It also didnât give us much time to prepare. So, after I explained what would happen, I quickly gathered the supplies I needed and hurried out to the altar.
Megan decided to stay behind with the Whelans at my house. Mr. Mittens accompanied me because he insisted on âprotectingâ me from my own woods. It was a good idea since I still wasnât over the unicorn incident.
I set up the altar and danced my dance before I said the stupid rhyme. I felt better this time, and the movement didnât hurt. At the end of the chant, my grandfather, without a delay, appeared in a blaze of light. He wasnât dressed for war this time, but he was still grumpy.
âWhy did you summon me?â he demanded, his voice thunderous in the still clearing.
âForgive me, grandfather. I donât have any way to contact you or Dana, and I have a pressing magical emergency,â I said, nervously.
âWell, what is it, child? I cannot stay long,â he answered and crossed his huge muscle-bound arms over his equally muscle hard torso.
Mr. Mittens jumped up on the altar and folded his tail neatly around his legs, watching with his luminous blue eyes. It started to mist. I shivered.
âUmm, the witch that stole my magic, used my ice to freeze two of my friends into statues.â I opened my phone and showed him the pictures of Gabe and Madison encased in their thin veil of ice.
He held the phone with a frown, examined the device carefullyâas though it was going to burn himâand finally looked at the photos. I flipped the page back and forth so he could view both victims.
âWhat is this clever device?â he asked.
âItâs a smart phone. A small computer that allows me to make phone calls and access the internet. It also acts as a camera, and lots of other things.â
âPhones when I was last here were simple machines,â he intoned. âI do not understand computer?â
âYes, phones have changed a lot in the last few years.â I put the phone back in my pocket and looked up at him. I had no idea how to explain a computer, so I ignored that part of his statement. âWhat about my frozen friends? Is there a way to unfreeze them safely?â
âYes, we should conclude our business quickly. I can explore the changes in this realm later. As for unfreezing them, there are two possibilities. You melt them with your fire magic, or you reverse your ice magic.â
I opened my mouth to interrupt him and remind him Iâd lost the ice magic, but he put up a hand to stop me. âI know the issues with your ice magic. The fire magic is a difficult one, as youâll have to be careful not to burn your friends.
